Crew Member Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her struggle with mental health after facing a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – including her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was buried under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own goal of reaching space was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she thanked the well-wishers whose support were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she wrote.

She added that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had resulted from the experience, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The computer-piloted spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
